Have you ever heard of linguistics?
Linguistics can be defined as the study of language and its manifestations. It investigates how we speak, understand and write, as well as how words and phrases are organised to form meanings. Linguistics also observes how languages change over time, how children learn to speak, and even how our brains process language. It is like studying the "rules" and "patterns" that make communication happen, even though we often do not realise that these rules exist.
A linguist studies human language. They investigate how languages are formed, how they work, and how people use them. Contrary to what some believe, however, a linguist is not someone who is fluent in several languages; "polyglot" is a more appropriate term for that. A linguist is someone who is able to talk about one or more languages without judging which sounds, grammar and vocabulary are "better" or "worse", but rather which are possible in languages and in which contexts.
